Dear Gardner Public Schools Students and Families,
As our district, our community, and our country, navigate through these difficult times, I want our students and families to feel respected, supported, and heard. I believe in our tagline that says “We Are All Wildcats.” However, I acknowledge that our community, like many communities, continues to be divided, and people of color continue to suffer from patterns of systemic racism throughout our country.
Unfortunately, I recognize that people of color experience a very different America than I do as a privileged White man. These racial inequities have existed for hundreds of years. Our district stands in solidarity with those who peacefully push forward the ideals laid down in our Constitution, guaranteeing all the inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Malala Yousafzai said that, “when the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” Right now, we are proud to have this silence broken by our many community members who are demanding a better future for all. My heart goes out to our staff, students, families, alumni, and especially our Black community members, as we continue to demand justice for the countless lives lost. We support those who participate in peaceful assemblies to honor the life of George Floyd.
In the midst of these trying times, our district continues to plan for a safe return to school after this unprecedented closure due to COVID-19. Our vision for Gardner Public Schools, and the Gardner community at-large, is that every person will feel welcomed, safe, and included in our community. Historically, the Black community throughout our country has suffered in every aspect of life--including their education. We will not waver in our passion to address any inequities in our work, and teach students a better way forward. We must do better. Our children are watching. The future will be in their hands, and now is the time to teach them the values that we hold dear.
In the end, we must work together to build bridges of collective understanding, and tear down the walls that divide us into polarized camps. Only this work will create the thriving school district and community that our students deserve, because they, and we, are ALL Wildcats.

Estimados Estudiantes y Familiares de las Escuelas Públicas de Gardner,
A medida que nuestro distrito, nuestra comunidad y nuestro país navegan por estos tiempos difíciles, quier que nuestros estudiantes y familias se sientan respetadas, apoyadas y escuchadas. Creo en nuestro lema que dice "Todos Somos Gatos Monteses". Sin embargo, reconozco que nuestra comunidad como muchas comunidades, continúa dividida y que las personas de color continúan sufriendo patrones de racismo sistémico en todo nuestro país.
Desafortunadamente reconozco que las personas de color experimentan una América muy diferente a la que yo tengo como un hombre Blanco privilegiado. Estas desigualdades raciales han existido durante cientos de años. Nuestro distrito se solidariza con aquellos que impulsan pacíficamente los ideales establecidos en nuestra Constitución, grantizando todo el derecho inalienable a la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad. Malala Yousafzai digo que "cuando todo el mundo está silencio, una sola voz se vuelve poderosa". En este momento, estamos orgullosos de que nuestros miembros de la comunidad rompan este silencio y exijan un futuro merjor para todos. Mi corazón está con nuestro personal, estudiantes, familias, ex estudiantes y especialmente con los miembros de nuestra comunidad Negra, ya que seguimos exigiendo justicia para las innumerables vidas perdidas. Apoyamos a quienes participan en asambleas pacíficas para honorar la vida de George Floyd.
En medio de estos tiempos difíciles, nuestro distrito continúa planificando un regreso seguro a la escuela después deste cierre sin precedentes debido al COVID-19. Nuestra visión para las Escuelas Públicas de Gardner y la comunidad de Gardner en general es que cada persona se sienta bienvenida, segura e incluida en nuestra comunidad. Históricamente, la comunidad Negra en todo nuestro país ha sufrido en todos los aspectos de la vida, incluida su educación. No renunciaremos a nuestra pasion por abordar las desigualdades en nuestro trabajo y enseñar a los estudiantes un mejor camino a seguir. Nuestros niños están mirando. El futuro estará en sus manos, y ahora es el momento de enseñarles los valores que apreciamos.
Al final debemos trabajar juntos para construir puentes de entendimiento colectivo y derribar los muros que dividen en campamentos polarizados. Solo este trabajo creará el próspero distrito escolar y la comunidad merecen, porque ellos y nosotros, TODOS Somos Gatos Monteses.
