Dog Licenses

State Law Requires a License

  • Licensing your dog is an important public safety requirement. All owners or keepers of a dog 6 months or older are required by state law to license it annually. Licensing is open from January 1st to March 31st of each year; penalties will be assessed after March 31st. Proof of alteration must be provided when first licensed and rabies vaccination must be current.
  • No licensing fee will be assessed for any dogs owned by individuals ages 70 or older.  Proof of age, such as a copy of a Driver's License or Birth Certificate must be provided.

Fees

  • Males/Females not fixed: $15.00
  • Neutered/Spayed: $11.00

Penalties

  • Late fee of $10.00 per dog after March 31st in addition to the cost of each license. A list of unlicensed dogs after March 31st will be turned over to the Animal Control Officer for collection. Any delinquent balances will be carried forward.
  • Once Animal Control has received the unlicensed dog list, $100 (per dog) failure to license citations will be issued to any dog owner who has not licensed their dog(s).  If the citation and license fees have not been paid within 21 days of the date on the citation the citation goes to Gardner District Court.  At that time, the owner may face criminal charges and be assessed legal fees.
