City Council Minutes 12/20/2010
Monday evening, December 20, 2010.  Regular Meeting of the City Council held in the Council Chambers, City Hall.~ Meeting called to order by President Neil Janssens at 7:30 o’clock p.m., who read aloud the following:

Any person may make a video or audio recording of the open session of this meeting so long as it does not interfere with the conduct of the meeting.~ All documents and exhibits used or referenced at this meeting shall be submitted in duplicate to the City Clerk, as they become part of the minutes of the meeting. Is there anyone present who will be recording this meeting?

Sam Bonacci, Reporter for The Gardner News, identified himself and announced he planned to audio record the meeting.  President Janssens informed the Council, where no objections were raised as to the manner and/or location of recording.

Roll call taken – Eleven (11) members present, President Neil Janssens and Councillors Alice Anderson, Henry Ares, David Boudreau, Joshua Cormier, Ronald Cormier, Patrick Gerry, Edward Gravel, Scott Graves, James Minns and James Robinson, Jr.

The Opening Prayer was recited in unison.

CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY
Councillors Patrick Gerry and James Minns encouraged interested citizens to enroll in the next Citizens Police Academy.

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR GREETINGS
Councillors extended best wishes for a Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday and Happy New Year to residents. Councilor James Robinson asked his colleagues and residents to remember in thought and prayer the service personnel serving overseas.  Councillor Joshua Cormier added the holidays are a special time of year and everyone should spend time with the ones they love.

CHRISTMAS TREE PICK-UP
Councillor Edward Gravel announced Waste Management would be picking up Christmas trees during the first week in January on the same day as the homeowners regular waste pick-up schedule.

CHRISTMAS DAY DINNER AT THE AMERICAN LEGION HALL
Councillor Henry Ares reminded senior citizens that the Gardner Lion’s Club is sponsoring a Christmas Day dinner at the American Legion Hall.  Persons interested in attending or receiving a home-delivered meal must contact the Senior Center immediately.   

LETTER TO THE EDITOR RESPONSE
Councillor Joshua Cormier stated he was bothered by negative comments in a “Letter to the Editor” that appeared today in The Gardner News concerning the City’s lack of support in establishing a permanent youth center, as well comments about the estimated cost to construct a new police station.  He remarked that as former Chairman of the Gardner Youth Commission, he and members pursued a permanent facility; however, the multi-year cost commitment to create one was unachievable.  He added that the estimates provided to construct a new police station “are not set in stone”.  He invited the “Letter writer” to volunteer his time to pursue the creation of a permanent youth center, as well as to visit the police station to see for himself the poor conditions.

THE GARDNER MUSEUM’S ANNUAL “FESTIVAL OF TREES”
President Neil Janssens informed the Council that a card of thanks and appreciation was received from Janet Stankaitis, Chairman of the Museum’s “Festival of Trees”, acknowledging the Council’s participation.
