September 21, 2019, 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM @ Cummings Conservation Area
The first of this 3-part series of guided hikes will begin on Saturday, September 21st. Meet at the Cummings Conservation Area trailhead on Bridge Street. A local naturalist will lead the hike along the Baily Brook cold-water stream and travel through the cool shade of a hemlock glen before ascending over a glacial esker formed at the end of the last ice age. We will view and discuss examples of native plants, cold-water fisheries, glacial erratic boulders, floodplain forests and the Otter River and its unique wetland ecology. Local naturalists and historians Doug and Barbara Fleming will discuss the natural history of this special place and its unique geology and ecology. Doug will share his memories of this land from his time spent at his grandparents’ home on Bridge Street and will provide us with a personal perspective which will capture our curiosity and leave us wanting to know more.

During this event a unique "Erickson Silver" ring will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
September 28, 2019, 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM @ Gardner Ale House
The Gardner Chair Luge is held in Downtown Gardner during the Oktoberfest "Party in the Street" at the Gardner Ale House. The idea is to get a chair, put wheels on it, put some kind of brakes and steering on it, don a helmet and roll downhill, starting at the Gardner Ale House and finishing at Beauregard Liquors. Teams of two build their ride and race each other down the street for about 200 yards, trying not to crash, and the winner is crowned champion. The Acadien Social Club features “Human Bumpers” and a locally known emcee who’s shtick and costume are always a surprise. A theme is chosen each year (Hollywood this year!) to add spice and laughter, and direct the Lugers to dress up.
