City of Gardner Designated as Green Community
The City of Gardner recently became a State-designated Green Community under the Massachusetts Green Communities Act. The Green Communities Division within the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) is charged with guiding cities and towns along a path of enhanced energy efficiency and the promotion of renewable energy. The Green Communities Division’s goal is to help cities and towns maximize energy efficiency in public buildings including schools, city halls, and public works and public safety buildings; generate clean energy from renewable sources, and manage rising energy costs.

As a Green Community, the City was awarded three BigBelly® Solar Compactors units by the Massachusetts DOER, Green Communities Division. The trash receptacles are completely self-powered by solar energy. The units are the same size as a normal trash receptacle, but hold five times more trash, reducing the amount of times they need to be emptied.

The units will be placed at the Montachusett Regional Transit Authority (MART) bus stop behind the Post Office on the corner of Connors Street and City Hall Avenue, at Monument Park centered between Cottage, Park and Central Street, and at Gardner High School located at 200 Catherine Street.
